Austin Robinson and Professor David Brown, Music
“Peer Recordings II” is a continuation of a project designed to build an archive of educational materials for use as a pedagogical resource to teach style and musicianship. This project provides an advanced Jazz Studies trumpet student with valuable recording experience. These recordings will be a valuable resource in aiding other students unfamiliar with Jazz styles to learn and feel comfortable in the idiom.
I have recorded 7 transcriptions from the improvised solos of Charlie Parker for this project, each at one faster and one slower tempo, for use as pedagogical aides.
These solos are extremely difficult and have required much time and effort to prepare and record. I have gained a number of benefits from this process. As a trumpet player, my understanding of and ability to perform this music has improved greatly. I also gained valuable pedagogical insight to the preparation of these materials and their use in education. I was also afforded the valuable opportunity of professional recording experience. Students can utilize these recordings as study and stylistic aides.
We are in the process of developing an accompanying stylist guide and analysis of these works. This guide will provide explanation and further education of the techniques utilized in the performance of these pieces, as well as analyses of Parker’s personal performance and style of composition. A BYU trumpet studio website is being developed which will include a link to the complete “Peer Recordings” archive to this point.
